Founded in 1997, Gertrude Street Yoga Studio is an urban centre for yoga, wellness, and community. We value yoga as a holistic practice that includes movement, meditation, and well being. Our classes offer the opportunity to connect to your body and breath, to relax and unwind, and to cultivate a community that extends beyond the mat.

Preparing for Your Class

When You Arrive:

  • We always recommend arriving 10 minutes early if it is your first visit in order to get a feel for the space and to meet the instructor.

What to Bring:

  • Wear active wear that you can move and breath comfortably in.
  • Bring your own yoga mat or hire one of ours for $1.
  • Also bring a bottle of water and a small towel.

Behind the Studio: Hannah Campos & Jaspah Marques

Tell us a little bit about how your yoga journey began.

Hannah: I grew up with a Mom who practiced yoga and took on the practice as my own in her early 20's. Jaspah: I developed my practice as a way of balancing a rigorous corporate work life over 10 years ago. Both Hannah and I decided to delve deeper into the practice when they signed up for a yoga teacher training in Mexico which is where we met!

What inspired you to take the leap and open up your own studio?

Jaspah: It was always a dream of ours to open a studio and Hannah was teaching at Gertrude Street Yoga when the previous owners decided they needed to move on to other things, so we jumped at the opportunity to continue running it.

Speaking of inspiration, what words do you live by? Name your personal or professional motto.

Not a motto persay but we love this Bree Brown quote: "No one belongs here more than you." We want everyone to feel welcome and an integral part of our community.

What sort of experience are you looking to cultivate when someone steps foot inside your yoga studio?

We hope Gertrude Street feels like a home away from home where everyone feels welcome to practice and take some time to relax and recharge.

No one belongs here more than you.

Describe the kind of music your teachers play during class. What's the music vibe like?

Our music is so diverse! You will hear everything from traditional to modern, from instrumental to lyrics, and sometimes we bring in live music to our classes which is always amazing!

While we're in the neighbourhood, what local spots should we check out before or after class?

Arcadia, Terror Twilight, Trippy Taco, South of Johnston, Neko Neko, Burnside.

If you could collaborate with someone on a dream project, who would it be and why?

Our dream project would be to collaborate with Bill Mollison on a community centre focused on permaculture, sustainability, farm to table eating, yoga, and mindful wellbeing!

Lastly, what are you most proud of when it comes to your studio and/or your community?

We are proud that we have been able to cultivate a strong a cohesive studio community and identity while maintaining a diverse and interesting range of classes and teachers!
