We combine music and yoga to create a fresh experience like no other. Our studios are a welcoming home for anyone wanting to experience the happiness of yoga.

Filled with natural light, plants and pineapples our Richmond studio is a happy oasis in the heart of the city. Walk up the yellow stairs and be greeted by a giant oil painting of Biggie Smalls. Sip herbal tea in our chill space before class and freshen up in our Californian inspired bathrooms after class. This is our home, so it makes sense that it feels like one.

Preparing for Your Class

Tell us a little bit about how your yoga journey began.

My yoga journey began in LA when I met Steve Ross at his studio Maha Yoga. After taking his hip hop yoga class something in me clicked and I immediately signed up for the 200hr YTT happening the next day.

What inspired you to take the leap and open up your own studio?

When I returned back to Melbourne I discovered that there were no studios like Steves that celebrated music and yoga. Back then it wasn't really a thing to have music playing in your classes, especially not Hip Hop music. I wanted to share the same happiness that I found in LA and be able to teach the style that I had come to love. So Yoga 213 was born.

Speaking of inspiration, what words do you live by? Name your personal or professional motto.

To Be Happy - it's the philosophy behind Yoga 213 and inspires all my decisions. I even have it tattooed on my arm.

What sort of experience are you looking to cultivate whenever someone steps foot into your studio?

At Yoga 213 we aim to make people feel happy, at ease, welcome and comfortable. We want people to feel at home the moment they walk in the door.

To Be Happy - it's the philosophy behind Yoga 213 and inspires all my decisions. I even have it tattooed on my arm.

Describe the kind of music your teachers play during class. What's the music vibe like?

All our classes are heavily based around music. And we turn it up loud. We are known for our Hip Hop Yoga classes: a dynamic vinyasa flow class set to (very) loud Hip Hop and R&B. We play a mix of old and new tunes and it's a lot of fun! We also offer Flow Yoga and Chill Yoga classes with a mix of acoustic, electronic, reggae, disco, r'n'b and folk tunes. Our Yin Yoga classes are super chill and mellow with ambient, dreamy music to guide you through.

While we're in the neighbourhood, what local spots should we check out before or after class?

Laneway Greens for amazing peanut butter smoothies and whole food bowls. Vegan Shack for delicious chai and coffee with house made nut milks + raw cakes! Glasshouse Florist for the most beautiful flowers and plants! Sister of Soul a delicious spot for a vegetarian dinner. Hanoi Hannah for modern, light and fresh vietnamese food.

If you could collaborate with someone on a dream project, who would it be and why?

We would collaborate with all our favourite musicians, yoga teachers and artists and make a big yoga festival celebrating yoga, music, health and wellness!

Lastly, what are you most proud of when it comes to your studio and/or your community?

We are proud that we have been able to share our happy yoga message to so many people. Through the combination of music and yoga we have yoga more accessible, fun and less intimidating encouraging more people to give it a go. We are proud of our committed teachers who work hard to inspire, uplift and support our amazing community.
