Yoga practice has been a part of my life since my school days; my friend and I went to weekly sessions to help relieve some stress from exams. It was then that my teacher told me that I struggle to relax (always fidgeting through Savasana with eyes wide open, thought they definitely aren't now!), which is something I have been consciously working with since. This had an influence on my belief in the balance between Yang & Yin. Too much Yang and we exhaust ourselves, but too much Yin and we stagnate. Come to my class and expect to feel balanced and grounded.

I feel very lucky to have come from England (many, many years ago) to Melbourne and that I get to be a part of this yoga community. There are so many incredible teachers and studios offering so much. For me, yoga has been a practice of consciousness, continually awakening to truth, cleansing what is destructive and feeling connected to myself and others. Yoga is Union - connecting to Mind, Body, Breath and Community!

Teaching & Certification

  • Move Yoga - 200 hour Vinyasa with Troy Abraham
  • Yoke Yoga - 50 hour Yin with Jen Crescenzo
  • Many wonderful teachers are guiding and inspiring me along the way

Teaching Style

  • Adjustments/Assists: An assist can have such a powerful effect. I love to give assists for purpose, correcting misalignment and sparking consciousness.

  • Theming: I tend to theme to what has resonated with me as it may resonate with you.

  • Sequencing: In Vinyasa we move with purpose, so I tend to sequence my theme so that there is logic, my brain always needs logic! In Yin, I tend to theme around the lines of the body and you will always know the target area so you can settle into the shape.

  • Music: In Vinyasa, songs that feel powerful to flow to! I am continually evolving and building them. In Yin, I LOVE one hour long songs, it really limits distractions so you can be with the sensations of your body.

On & Off the Mat With: Sammy Lee

As a yoga teacher, what inspires and motivates your teaching?

Students motivate me. It is an honour to guide students through an experience and one that I will never take for granted. Know that you can turn up to my class, regardless of what has been happening in your day and I will do my best to allow you to get out of your head and into your heart. This is what teachers have offered me and now I am in the position to offer that to others too.

How has your own yoga practice evolved since becoming a teacher?

I am conscious of my energy so I am not afraid to take a modification, sometimes modifications are the advanced practice. Also, I am just so open to teachings, I will always embrace my guides.

Do you have any yoga teachers that you admire and/or look up to? Who are they?

Kara Wheatley (Yoke) has had a huge impact on my world. Her Saturday morning classes have had such a profound impact on how I feel physically & mentally.
Troy Abraham (Power Living), my YTT Teacher, is an incredible being who kept pulling my shoulders down from my ears when practice teaching and enabled me to realise it’s ok to be me.
Chris Wilson (Yoke Founder) created a space that is a home for many, including me. He enables awakening and truly ‘sees’ people and me.
Oh my, the list can go on and on and on... Jen Crescenzo, Fran Wilson, Ryan Mannix, Amy Burke.

For those of us that haven't practiced with you before, what can we expect from your classes?

To feel grounded, concious and balanced, unless I have a different intention on the day... ;)

What type of class could you teach all day, everyday and why?

Yin, as I believe the practice and the meditative state is what we all need more of in this world full of distractions.

Come to my class and expect to feel balanced and grounded.

Do you practice any other form of movement or fitness besides yoga? If so, what kind?

Yoga is my jam. I adore going for coastal walks too, this Aussie coastline is incredible.

What's your go-to spot in Melbourne to get inspired?

Yoke. The teachers and the community inspire me daily.

Which 3 icons or figures would you want to sit next to at a dinner party and why?

Brene Brown - what an incredible lady, a lass that really speaks to my heart!
Yung Pueblo - would love for him to recite his poems and to find out the inspo behind them.
Alf Stewart - the reason I am in Australia is because I grew up watching Home & Away, so I would love a good natter with this Aussie icon.

Finish this sentence. "I feel the most like myself when..."

I surround myself with my loved ones.

And lastly because it's fun, what animal do you identify with?

My fiancé says I was a dog in a previous life - so happy, excitable and loves a cuddle!
